I am so excited to finally share this project that Ryan and I have been working on for the past month or so! It’s one of the many things that I’ve been doing instead of blogging but it was so worth it because now I have a beautiful, inspiring space to write from all summer long!
Last year Ryan and I had a bit of test run with our rooftop and ended up killing about 95% of our perennials which included rose bushes and a Ash Maple tree. We ended up having to dig all of that up which was a HUGE pain in the butt. This year we took a different approach bringing in more greenery with perennials like boxwood that will have a better chance at surviving the Chicago winter. We then focused on bright annuals to bring lots of color to the space. A huge shout out to Ryan’s mom for all of the gorgeous plants and flowers that she bought us.
As far as décor, I wanted to keep things mostly neutral with a splash of color. I started with this classic outdoor rug. Its great quality and helps make the space feel a little cozier. These striped pillows from Terrain were the exact splash of color I was looking for – bright but subtle and I pulled the blue from striped pillows with these blue tassel pillows. I adore this outdoor throw that I found at Target and I’m always chilly, even in the Summer months, so I had no reason not to get it!
Another thing that ended up being a bit challenging was the lighting. There were only two very dim lights installed and it gets pretty dark up there so we brought in lots of lanterns and flameless candles. We also bought this lighting kit per my dad’s recommendation and it look amazing! I’m pretty proud of how it turned out! I’ll try to get some good pics of the evening lighting.
We also just had one more piece delivered last weekend that isn’t pictured but I’m so excited because it will be really helpful for entertaining up there. We put this buffet right next to the grill. It has tons of storage and is the perfect spot to set up food and store plates and cooking supplies! I’m sure you’ll be seeing tons of more of the space on my Instagram stories all summer long. Stay tuned for updated on how the plants are surviving the summer!!
