Statement accessories are probably one of my biggest style secrets and closet staples. I’ve always loved anything that is overly embellished from studded necklaces and tassel earrings to pom pom handbags and hats. However, there’s a fine line between making a statement and being a little too over the top. I’m sure you’ve seen many statement accessories and thought to yourself, when or how would I ever wear that without looking ridiculous. My secret to making a statement is keep everything else somewhat simple.
If you’re trying to put together an outfit around a statement accessory (like this adorable kissy face straw clutch,) keep everything else as simple as possible. Instead of pairing the bag with a pattern or ruffle top, I stuck with a basic black and white combo so that the handbag would pop.
I follow the same rule when I’m wearing a statement skirt or dress. I usually try to stick with more basic accessories that won’t take away from the dress. For example, I would consider my romper from yesterday’s post a statement romper so I picked one color (blush pink) and went with more subdued blush pink accessories to compliment the pattern on the romper.
To put it simply, I like to view my accessories as one category and my articles of clothing as another category. Pick one category to incorporate your statement pieces and keep the other category a bit more basic.
