One of my all time favorite things is watching The Today Show every morning with a cup of coffee. My mom always had a morning talk show on when I would get ready for school as a kid and I think it just makes me feel at home. I also like that it gives me a good overview of what’s going on in the world while mixing in some light hearted stories and really educational topics. During Hoda & Jenna’s segment, they’ve been talking about slowing down which is something that I’ve always struggled with. I used to be someone woke up at 6 AM even on the weekends to get to the gym and run a bunch of pointless errands all day. This lead to a big burnout so recently, I’ve been trying to focus on using my weekends to really slow down and get in the habit of starting my week at a slower pace as well. This series gave me the idea to start a “Weekend Wellness” series. On Fridays (or maybe Thursdays sometimes) I’ll share one way that you can work on slowing down during the upcoming weekend and week. I’ll also try it out and plan to share how it worked for me in the followingย “Weekend Wellness” post.
For this first Weekend Wellness challenge, I wanted to start with the same challenge that was done on The Today Show. For the next five days, you must commit to the following:
1. Voluntarily put your phone away for at least 2 hours each day.
Tip:ย Put it away while you’re doing something fun like reading a book, cooking dinner, spending time with family, out with friends, etc so you’re not as tempted to pick it up you’ll also be more present in the moment. A work out class, going to the movies, anything were you’re not allowed to have a phone out doesn’t count!
2. Meditate for 10 minutes
Tip: I love the Calm app and meditation has worked best for me in the morning or right after a workout!
3. Decline unwanted obligations – Aka say NO to things you don’t want to do
Tip: You can use me as your excuse ๐
A couple notes about what the three people who participated in the Today Show’s challenge said. They all enjoyed the meditation but saying no and putting their phone away for 2 hours each day seemed to be the most challenging especially during the work week.
I think that by starting a challenge like this during the weekend will help start you on the right foot and set you up for success to carry this on into the weekend. Do you think you can last all five days or maybe even more? I’ll share how it worked for me next week!
