Despite the fact that it is officially spring, gloomy Saturday’s and Sunday’s seem to have become the norm here in Chicago and I think everyone is really starting to get bogged down by the winter blues. I feel like this has been the longest, dreariest winter in a while. I’m dying for a sunny Sunday that can be spent running along the lakefront, grilling dinner and walking down the street to Annette’s for ice cream but until then, I’ll have to brighten up my weekends on my own. I thought I’d share a few ways that I’ve been getting myself in the spring spirit even though the weather still feels like winter.
- Wear Bright Colors and fun patterns: Just because it’s gloomy outside doesn’t mean you have to dress the part. Its time to break out the bright colors and floral patterns! It is officially spring after all so there’s no reason you can’t break out the spring wardrobe. Gingham is the perfect pattern to ease your way into spring and it always comes in the best colors.
- Take a walk for a tasty treat: Since its a little too cold for ice cream, Ryan and I walk down the street to Sweet Mandy B’s, our favorite bakery in the city, for a sweet treat. If you’ve never been, the inside of this sweets shop is full of bright colors including the treats which are all covered in the most delicious pastel frosting. Its hard not to feel happy after a visit to Sweet Mandy B’s. Its also so nice to get some fresh air and have something fun to look forward to in the afternoon or after dinner now that is staying light out later. Just make sure to bundle up and cozy up inside while you enjoy your treat.
- Go for a drive & turn up the tunes: I’ve been going out to the suburbs a lot lately and have loved getting out of the city and driving around with a little country music on the radio. It is so nostalgic of summer afternoons and helps me get excited about warmer days that are just around the corner (fingers crossed!).
- Sunday Showers bring Spring Flowers: Add fresh flowers to your weekly grocery list! Having fresh, bright colors in the house always helps to brighten my day. Trader Joe’s has very reasonably priced flowers especially now that tulips are in season. If you’re trying to justify the cost of a $10 bouquet of flowers every week, remind yourself that taking care of yourself mentally (with flowers) just as important as taking care of physically (with good food)!
I’d love to hear some of your favorite ways to make the most of a gloomy weekend. Comment below!
