Last year I wrote this post about my take on making New Year’s resolutions. It’s actually kind of funny to read back to myself because I can tell how stressed out I was. While I still feel very much the same about New Year’s resolutions, I’m in such a different headspace this year and it looking back on that makes me feel so great about how far I’ve come. If you don’t feel like reading through my ramblings from last year’s post, I’ll summarize for you. I like to keep my New Year’s Resolutions a little more broad so that they can help guide my day to day decisions instead of having super concrete items that may be hard to keep up with at different periods throughout the year. So today, I wanted to share a few of the categories I’m going to focus on this year.
Get Organized and Stay Organized
I know this one is super cliche but it’s a big one for me this year having just moved into a new home. When it comes to our new home, Ryan and I are making a conscious effort to take one thing at a time so that we do it right. I want to be really thoughtful about how I organize each space, closet and drawer in our home so that we can get super organized. It’s so much easier to stay organized when you have really thought out systems in place. Usually I get really unorganized when I’m rushing so the other piece of this is that I need to work on slowing down and doing things the right way instead of cutting corners and rushing through things just to get it done. I’m excited to share some of the organization tricks and tips with you all along the way!
Look & Feel More Fresh
Instead of making my resolution something like “practice more self care” I’m resolving to “look and feel more fresh” because its much easier to apply this in the decision making process. Instead of asking “what kind of self care can I do today?”, I can ask myself “what can I do today that’s going to help me feel fresh?” Focusing on how I want to feel will help me evaluate what kind of positive changes I need to make in my day to day life and is something that will allow me to make changes to my routine based on what is on my plate that week, day, month, etc. Not only does this resolution mean I want to focus on getting more, better sleep, eat healthier and work out more often but it also means I want to focus on my skincare and work towards wearing less make up. When I have to make decisions that pertain to these topics each day, I will simply ask myself what is going to help me look and feel fresh?
Be More Like 5 Year Old Me
This probably sounds silly but what I really mean is that I want to lose the self-judgement that I’ve built up over the past 22 years. I was watching home videos with my family the other night. In the video I was 5 year’s old. It was so fun and enlightening to see myself at that age. It was so clear to see the personality traits that have been engrained in me since I was a little girl. I was wearing a frilly dress with ruffle socks and white patent leather shoes (I always dressed myself). I was playing store and helping my little sisters every chance I got. I was pretty quiet but confident when I spoke and also pretty silly and awkward. There are things about who I am that I’ve tried to change over the years, but, seeing these traits in myself as a little girl made me realize that those traits I’ve been trying to change are just who I am. So, when I’m feeling critical of myself, I want to try to remind myself of how confident and judgement free I was of myself at 5 years old and be more like that Lauren.
Keep Learning
While I am always trying to continue to learn, I really want to make this a focus this year. I have some really big long term professional goals and dreams that I want to make a priority. This year I’m going to start doing that by learning through books, research and classes. I also want to apply this on a personal level with things like learning new recipes, trying golf or tennis, and reading more books.
